What is a Proper Meditation Consciousness?

Meditation consciousness can be ever so elusive when so many sources of information give conflicting views on the purpose and goals of meditation. It leaves one to wonder is anyone doing it properly, and where does the idea originate from? Most religions have a claim on it. The general idea seems to become closer to God or make your mind more like the mind of God. Buddhism bends more toward the idea of enlightenment or illumination through the emptying of ones mind. I guess it's like blowing your nose, a lifetime of worry and harsh experiences can congest ones mind pretty good, I would imagine. Christianity says to meditate on what is good and noble, meaning Good works and kind acts. The point of this would be to eventually train your mind to respond to situations in need of such actions, which I would think we need all the time. which way is right? Probably, both are true.
